Barcelona duo Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez have been shortlisted alongside Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo in the final three of the UEFA Best Player Award.
The three were nominated after journalists from each of UEFA’s 54 member associations provided a list of their five best-ranked players, with the first receiving five points, the second four, and so on.
Making the preliminary top ten but missing out on the top three were Barca striker Neymar, Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and teammates Andrea Pirlo, Paul Pogba, Carlos Tevez and Arturo Vidal, as well as Chelsea’s Eden Hazard.
Cristiano Ronaldo will defend his UEFA Best Player Award against Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez who had a fantastic 2014/15 season, winning the treble “La Liga, Copa dey Rey and the UEFA Champions League” last season.
Lionel Messi scored 40 goals and made 18 assists in La Liga and netted 10 times in Champions League this season. On the other hand, Cristiano Ronaldo scored 42 goals, provided 15 assists in La Liga and also scored 9 times in Champions League. Luis Suarez scored 25 goals and made about 20 assist in his season debut with Barcelona, scoring 16 times with 14 assist in La Liga.
The winner will be announced during the UCL group stage draw in Monaco on Tuesday, August 27 after the jury have cast their votes.
