A Colombian soccer player who accidentally scored in his own goal – helping the U.S. World Cup team to victory – was killed by gunmen apparently angry over the error.
Andres Escobar, a talented and popular player, returned to Colombia Wednesday after his team, a favorite before the World Cup began, was eliminated in the first round. Witnesses quoted in radio news reports said Escobar was attacked by three men who disappeared in a car. Witnesses said one of the gunmen shouted, ”Goal, Goal” as he fired each shot.
Escobar, 27, died shortly afterward in a Medellin hospital.
In the June 22 match in Pasadena, Calif., Escobar, who was a defender, accidentally sent the ball into his own goal as he attempted to deflect a pass by Harkes.
His goal gave the Americans a 1-0 lead, and they went on to win, 2-1, for their first victory in the World Cup in 44 years.
That is why today anyone who scores an own goal is said to have done an ‘Escobar’
